Regional Theatre Young Directors Scheme and three-month placement with Talking Birds Theatre (2020)
Over the last few years I have been supported by and engaged with the work of directors who have been on Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme placements. I had been writing, producing and directing my own work, having a small child and then having to include access provision in my applications. I felt that there were a lot of barriers restricting my development, so I contacted the RTYDS office at The Exchange Theatre and explained my situation.
Next, I was speaking to the team at Talking Birds about their work, how my skills within access for blind and visually impaired audiences could be beneficial for them. They offered to support me by providing opportunities to focus on my role as a director and gain a deeper understanding of how an NPO (National Portfolio Organisation) is run.
Talking Birds are a company who work to school hours which helps as my little one is in nursery. I not only worked on their projects but was provided with training to create new work for the company.

CRIPtic - Pit Party
Barbican Centre
Fri. 11 and Sat. 12 October, 2019
Duration: 2 hours 15 mins/including an interval
To start, Hale performs NOT DYING in which they recount their full-circle story of progressive disability, from the agony and gracelessness of threatening death to the jubilance and defiance of survival. To follow, D/deaf and disabled artists expand on the selected themes of anger, fortitude and joy in short sets of music, dance and spoken word. Together their Pit Party recreates deeply personal experiences rarely represented on stage in a spirited, celebratory atmosphere.
