I am registered severely sight impaired which translates in everyday life as blind.
It has been an interesting journey learning to live with my sight condition. I struggled through secondary school, got frustrated when I did not get the grades I wanted for A-Levels and was not able to survive on as little sleep as everyone else. I completed my first degree with no understanding of how my sight was affecting me or the support available and had to fight to gain support for my postgraduate.
It was only after I moved to Birmingham, met the brilliant team at Action for Blind People (now merged with RNIB) that I was registered with my sight condition and able to access support and accept that help.
In 2017 I became a mother and was exposed to the craziness of trying to understand how to look after a small human. During the end of my pregnancy my sight deteriorated due to the tiredness I was experiencing and made accessing information even more difficult but after having my baby and once my body started to recover I realised that I enjoy being a mother and am pretty good at it.
I still get bad days like any other person but I have adapted to living with my sight condition and embraced baby classes which have been good for both me and my little one.
